SGA Officers Elected
at Recent RetreatGroup Photo for SGA Retreat

By Bonnie Smith

This past month, the Student Government Association went to a retreat at Pickwick Lake which was directed by Pam Powell, Coordinator of Student Activities at Macon and Phoenix Worthy, Coordinator of Student Activities at Union. The bus arrived at the Macon campus at approximately 11:30 a.m. SGA representatives and officers were prepared for an enriching experience with ideas and goals to serve in their new position.

The event began with an introductory of each attendee. It didn’t take long before the ice was broken and the ideas were flowing throughout the room. Taurus Rogers, the president for this past year, explained the importance of Parliamentary Procedures. Willie Clark from Upward Bound gave a presentation on communication, and Dean Thomas Walker made a presentation on leadership. Also, Bill Cavanaugh, the SGA Advisor, made his presentation on Creative Thinking.

The speakers used roll playing and games to teach these skills. These techniques had a dual purpose: to teach and to discover who were good leaders, followers, creative thinkers and communicators. When Thursday rolled around it was time to decide who would be this year’s student government. The elected body included: President, Carla Palmore; Sergeant-at-Arms, Sara Hurst; Macon Vice-President, Mary Vo; Union Vice-President, Walter Watson; Satellite Vice-President, Tim Smith; Secretary, Jada Chatman; Macon Club Representative, Lori Grimmett; Union Club Representative, LaQuita Tucker and Webmaster, Jennifer Brown.

The week was a learning experience for students as well as presenters. The new student government is excited about the upcoming year and is prepared to work hard to achieve its goals.

PREAMBLE TO CONSTITUTION

Within the academic community at Southwest Tennessee Community College, it is necessary for some degree of organization for the purpose of unifying and expressing student opinion, protecting student’s rights, maintaining an atmosphere of academic freedom, promoting student activities in both social and academic areas, and to communicate with the administration, faculty, and staff of Southwest Tennessee Community College.
